Christmastime is all about spending it with friends and family, enjoying the eggnog and snowy evenings, and celebrating the birth of the Messiah. Unfortunately, for Professor McAndrew this is not the case.

It was around this time one year ago that Professor McAndrew’s dear friend and colleague, Mr. Ardone, mysteriously went missing. Mr. Ardone left behind a note for Professor McAndrew that read, “Gone to the scene—I think I solved it! Be back in an hour.” You see, the professor and Mr. Ardone were private investigators and they were working on a homicide case that the local police had ruled “accidental”. Mr. Ardone never returned. Now, Professor McAndrew had a new case to solve…the vanishing of his dear friend. Was his mysterious disappearance somehow related to the homicide? The professor was convinced so.

Professor McAndrew entered his dimly lit study, sat down, and sunk into his big, brown, leather, wingback chair located next to his mahogany end table. The fireside crackled. It was snowing and cold outside, but the warmth from his cashmere cardigan coupled with the inviting fireplace made him feel content. In one hand he swirled a glass of merlot. Subtle notes of black cherry wafted into the air. He reached over, with his other hand, to his mahogany end table and picked up an 1889 first edition of Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. It was an original green pictorial cloth housed in a full morocco clam shell box—you know, the kind that smells of old pages when you open it. In fact, his den was full of those old books stacked all around the room on wall-to-wall bookcase shelving.

Outside, the winter snow continued to fall.

The professor turned the page. He paused to ponder and took a sip of the merlot. Just then the door to his private study slowly creaked open. A tall, shadowy figure filled the doorway. “Professor…”, the dark form started and then paused. “…I’ve returned.”
