Choosing the Right Pomade

Choosing the Right Pomade

Posted by The Godfather on Sep 1st 2021

We get asked a lot: “Hey, which pomade will work best for my hair style?” Not only is it a common question, but it’s a great question. If you’re new to Lox or if you haven’t tried all of our pomades yet, then this could be very helpful to you in deciding which pomade (or pomades) will work best in your hair. In this article we will be going over different hair types and styles and how our pomades perform with them. Of course, you could just skip the reading portion and go pickup our Pomade Sample Pack and start digging in immediately!

Hair Types

Everyone is different. Each of us has our own personality, true, but we’re talking about hair. There’s hair length: short, medium, long. Some haircuts have all of these lengths in just one style! Then there’s hair oils. Some people have very naturally oily hair and others do not. Then we get into the different hair types: curly, thick, thin, straight, and so on. As you can see there are so many different types, lengths, and styles. Choosing the right hair product can be challenging (and downright expensive if you continue purchasing products that don’t work well for you).

Thick Hair

Our recommendations for thick hair styles would be any of our light to medium hold pomades. The Godfather uses  Battle Wax (we consider his hair to be medium-thick hair). You could use Battle Wax too, but for really thick hair this may not be the best option. We recommend trying any of our styling creams or Summer Raid for those of you with really thick hair.

Slick Back

For those of you rocking the slick back hair style we recommend using  Battle WaxWardaddy Wax, and ¡Manos Arribas! pomades. These pomades have a stronger hold than the others and they produce a nice thick substance that, when applied evenly, results in great hold and sheen. If you’re looking for a high sheen slick back then simply apply to wet hair (and maybe a dab more pomade).

Curly Hair

Believe it or not, The Godfather has curly, wavy hair. The strength of hold in Lox’s pomades do a great job at controlling this hair type. Again, start with  Battle Wax, but don’t be surprised if any or all of our pomades and styling creams work well in your curly, wavy hair.

Thin Hair

For thin hair we recommend thick pomade. Try our  Battle WaxWardaddy Wax, or ¡Manos Arribas!. Since our products are all natural, don’t be shocked if your thin hair starts filling in—score one for the good guys!

Hold

Hold is very subjective. What one person calls a “strong hold” another person calls a “light hold”. This has to do with how the all natural ingredients in our pomades interact with the natural oils in your hair. If you’re looking for a good, strong hold then we recommend  Battle WaxWardaddy Wax, and ¡Manos Arribas!. For a medium hold try any of Lox’s Styling Creams. And for a light hold use Summer Raid. Here’s a pointer: since Lox uses beeswax as our primary holding agent you can get more hold by simply applying more product to your hair. Start off with a small amount and increase gradually to attain the hold and style you desire. Remember, a little bit goes a long way.

Sheen

Sheen is another word for “shine”. Since everyone’s hair is oily in their own unique way, each pomade will produce a different sheen for each user. The user can also manipulate the amount of sheen by applying to dry hair for a lighter sheen, damp hair for a medium sheen, or wet hair for a higher sheen. Understanding all of that, Lox’s pomades offer a natural sheen and some are designed to offer a certain type of sheen. For example,  Lox’s Styling Creams offer a medium sheen, Summer Raid offers a matte (dull) sheen, Wardaddy Wax and ¡Manos Arribas! offer a high sheen, and all our other Classic Pomades offer a medium sheen.

Build Up

“Build Up” is a legitimate term we use in the pomade industry to describe the process of leaving pomade in your hair for a period of time. Does it sound gross? Well, yeah, if you use water-based and most oil-based pomades it is gross. Lox is winning the Pomade Wars, in part, because we use all natural ingredients. When you use the “Build Up” method with Lox, which we will get into detail shortly, you’re actually not damaging your hair, but rather nourishing and strengthening it.

Here’s how to properly use the “Build Up” method. After you shower and shampoo your hair, grab your favorite Lox pomade and style it. Now, instead of washing it out at the end of the day, simply leave it in your hair. There is a compromise to this, and that is rinsing your hair out with water (using no shampoo). Then, next morning, simply add some water and just a small amount more of pomade, restyle your hair, and go on with your day. You will notice that you do not need near as much pomade as you did the day before when you styled it after your shower. You’ll also notice that your hair will hold in place longer and have a more natural sheen to it. Repeat this process for several days, until the need for adding more pomade is obsolete (simply restyle your hair without adding anymore pomade).

Not only will your hair hold in place longer and look better each day, the all natural ingredients will nourish, hydrate, condition, and strengthen your hair and scalp giving you a very healthy head. Since everyone is different (as mentioned before, everyone will have different hair density, length, and oil amount), the length of time using the “Build Up” process is totally up to the user. The Godfather washes his hair with Lox’s  Ulfhednar Hand Crafted Shampoo Bar just once a week. The other six days he uses this method of building up pomade in his hair—and he mixes it up. Yes, you can use different pomades in your hair throughout the “Build Up” process!

Classic Pomades

Our Classic Pomades are made by hand using all natural ingredients. By that, we mean our entire pomade is all natural. We have to clarify that point, because there are pomade posers out there who say they make “pomades using all natural ingredients”. In fact, when you look at their ingredients list it’s comprised of mostly alcohol, chemicals, and synthetic ingredients with just one all natural ingredient. Don’t be fooled.
