Everything You Need to Know About Pomades vs. Styling Creams

Posted by Lox & Company on Aug 17th 2023

On your quest to stay looking Sharp and Savage, there are many options available to you. A simple stroll down the male grooming aisle at your local store will reveal enough options to make your head spin. The good news is that most of that stuff is pure dreck — you can leave it right where it is.

Our goal at Lox & Company is to provide a carefully curated selection of handcrafted, all-natural grooming products for men (and women) that you can feel good about using. And of course, they’ll get you the results you’re looking for. Two categories you should know about are pomades and styling creams.

But what exactly are these products, and what makes them different? Let’s dive right in!

What Are Pomades, and How Do You Use Them?

Pomade is a thick styling product for all hair types that holds your hair in place without making it crunchy or rigid. This means you can restyle your hair easily throughout the day, without having to apply more pomade or wash your hair and start over. Note that beeswax-based pomades like ours can be hard to the touch at colder temperatures, and you may need to warm it up slightly before use to get the best results.

To use pomade, scrape a small amount from the tin and rub it between your hands until your palms are shiny — we call this “breaking it down.” Run your hands through your hair to evenly distribute the pomade. Then, simply style your hair to achieve your desired look. Need help figuring out a hairstyle? Check out our blog, “Best Men’s Hairstyles for Using Pomade” for some inspiration!

We make our pomades with only all-natural ingredients like local beeswax for hold and high-grade essential oils for the best scents ever. Our pomades are packed with nutrients and moisturizers, so you’ll actually be conditioning your hair when you use them.

We have another blog you may want to check out that goes into all the benefits of our all-natural pomades, called “Why Choose an All-Natural Pomade?” Read that to discover how much better our pomades are than the chemical-laced alternatives at your local drug store. Who knew you could feel so good about the product you use in your hair!

What Are Styling Creams, and How Do You Use Them?

Styling creams, as the name suggests, are hair grooming products that have a “creamier” consistency than pomades. They’re soft and light to the touch while still providing enough hold strength to achieve a variety of hairstyles for all hair types.

Because of its soft consistency, you don’t have to worry about warming up styling cream before use. Open up the lid, scoop some out, break it down between your hands, and apply to your hair! Then style it using your fingers as you normally would. And speaking of breaking it down — our styling creams literally have the smoothest, most satisfying breakdown ever. You have to experience it for yourself to see what we mean!

Like our pomades and all our grooming products, we make our styling creams with only all-natural ingredients including coconut oil, shea butter, and even a bit of local beeswax for just the right amount of hold while still being smooth to the touch. Our styling creams are packed with the vitamins and minerals that your hair is craving, so use it generously and enjoy the results!

Can You Use Pomades and Styling Creams Together?

Yes you can! While both pomades and styling creams can stand on their own, using them together unlocks an entirely different experience that may be exactly what you need when doing your hair in the morning.

Here’s what we recommend. First, use one of our all-natural pomades like you normally would to style your hair. This step doesn’t have to be perfect, because you’ll achieve that with the next step — adding some styling cream to finish it off! Using your styling cream of choice, finish styling your hair to get it looking exactly like you want. What you’ve essentially done is layer the two products together, so you get the initial hold of the pomade and the finishing smoothness of the styling cream.

Another reason to use pomades and styling creams together is to start making your own flavor combinations. For instance, Battle Wax Hair & Beard Pomade smells like classic vanilla and fresh-squeezed lime. Sky High Slick Styling Cream features notes of sweet orange zest and vanilla cream. Now imagine using both products together — you’ll get a citrus-forward, slightly sweet scent rounded out by vanilla. Our mouths are watering just thinking about it (resist the urge to take a taste!).

Is Grooming Cream Different Than Styling Cream?

Grooming cream is a subcategory of styling cream, but we think it’s important to make the distinction. Here’s how it came to be.

The Godfather, who is the mastermind behind Lox, was busy making a new styling cream, but he wanted to make it smoother and lighter than any that had come before. The result was literally the smoothest styling cream he had ever experienced. It was so smooth, in fact, that he couldn’t help using it in both his beard and his hair — it was just too good to resist.

That was when he knew he had made something a bit different than your average styling cream. Charlie’s Weather Grooming Cream was born! With its light/medium hold, amazing scent, and nourishing vitamins and minerals, our grooming cream will help your hair and beard achieve their very best!
